Rocklin, Calif. resident John Patrick Shanahan, an avid long-distance bicycle rider, is compiling a journal from a cross-country bicycle trip he took with friends in 1986, which brought him to Big Stone Gap. Their journey started in Arcata, Calif., with the goal of crossing the country on 10-speed bikes, seeing as much of 'backwoods America' as possible.
