Bond funds to finance museum upgrades

Blue Highway headlines May 29 festival The Grammy-nominated bluegrass group "Blue Highway" headlines the Friends of the Southwest Virginia Museum's Fourth Annual "Gathering in the Gap" festival set for Saturday, May 29, on the grounds of the museum. Other Main Stage performers at the festival will be Folk Soul Revival, Clay Prewitt and These Undowners, Adam Larkey and Mountain Time, Ron Short and the Possum Playboys and the Whitetop Mountain Band. Tim Stafford, of Blue Highway, will lead a songwriting workshop and there will also be workshops in Traditional Dance and Shape-Note Singing. Entries are now being taken for the acoustic instrument, string band and songwriting competitions, and there will be jams, a children's area featuring a simple instrument making workshop, and inside the museum, the annual "Stitch in Time" Quilt Show. Antique, food and craft vendors will also be on site, and a variety of compact discs by performing groups will be sold. SONGWRITING CONTEST: Performances by the top 10 finalists in a new festival songwriting contest have been added to the Main Stage lineup. Rules and entry forms are on the festival website. Entries are being accepted on compact discs from now through April 15. Discs must be accompanied by a lyric sheet, entry form and check or money order for the entry fee of $10 for the first song, $5 for a second song. Entries can be taken to the museum or mailed to: Friends of the Southwest Virginia Museum, P.O. Box 294, Big Stone Gap, VA 24219. Finalists will be notified by April 29. On-site judges will make the final determination of first, second, and third place winners. The first-place winner will also receive a five-hour recording session at the Grammy Award-winning recording studio, Maggard Sound of Big Stone Gap. The top three winners get cash prizes and a free ticket to a songwriting workshop by Tim Stafford. FESTIVAL TICKETS: Children under age 12 are admitted free. Tickets for adults and ages 12 and over are $10 in advance, $15 the day of the event. Tickets can be purchased at the museum, by calling 523-1322 or at the gate. Workshops require separate tickets and advance registration is advised.
