The 1971 program for the Trail of the Lonesome Pine notes: 'Jack McClanahan Jr. has been with the Trail its entire lifetime and has grown up to be one of its principal characters.’ As a 14-year old boy, McClanahan helped fence the area behind the June Tolliver House when the drama stage was being built, bring in the trees that flanked the stage backdrop and ran errands for electricians and carpenters. On stage, he played Willie for three seasons, then Cousin Dave for several years. Today’s audiences know him as Devil Judd Tolliver. ‘When it came to volunteers, in those early years, I worked with giants. I learned how to think through problems, how to work hard, how to make do with what you had to work with,’ he said.
