People cruise in for a good cause

Joe Springen’s 1981 Ford LTD drew the attention of old and young. Springen, a Lee County native, now lives in Kingsport. Springen’s cartoonish vehicle used to be parked in a chicken coop, he said, and ‘there was chicken feed all in the car.’ The floorboards are covered by sections of wooden crates, there’s prominent Elvis art in a couple of compartments, the engine compartment looks like it’s been used as a waste basket.
