It is with deep sadness that the family of Robert Gregory Scalf, 64, announces his passing on June 3, 2026. Greg–as he was known–was born and raised in Port Clinton, Ohio. He was a Government/Social Studies teacher, having taught 31 years in PC, in the same classroom: 113. Greg retired in 2017, permanently moving with his wife to Litchfield Beach, SC in 2023 where he was elected to his Community’s Board of Directors. He is preceded in death by his father, Jimmy Parks Scalf of Appalachia, VA.
After earning his B.S.Ed. at Toledo, he taught in Lynchburg, VA for one year before returning to PC in 1986. During his teaching tenure Greg touched the lives of nearly every student who passed through PCHS (1986-2017), as Government was a mandatory course for Graduation. His professional career was very active, serving on the Port Athletic Hall of Fame Committee; Social Studies Department Chair; Head Coach for Baseball and Girls Basketball; Assistant Varsity Coach for Football, Boys Basketball, and Baseball; and 7th and 8th Grade Football. Greg earned his M.Ed. in Classroom Technology and was also named Port Clinton Citizen of the Year, as he took immense pride in organizing ‘Government Day,’ which allowed his students to step out of the classroom and shadow local civic and government leaders in Ottawa County to get a firsthand look at how their community operates while exploring potential career paths.
Greg is survived by his wife and Soulmate of 23 years Lori Michelle Scalf of Litchfield Beach, SC; children: Madison and Travis Scalf of Richmond, VA: Robert (Amanda) Bascone of Oak Harbor, OH; and Eryn Binder of Sandusky, OH; brother Steve (Janie) Scalf of Vermilion, OH; his mother Lois Bernell Scalf of Appalachia, VA; and his beloved Boxer, Lincoln. Greg also leaves behind numerous friends who were just like family to him.
A Celebration of Life will take place at a later date in Port Clinton, Ohio. Memorials may be made in Greg’s Honor to the Port Clinton Athletic Hall of Fame: Attn: Tracey Tomaselli, PCHS Athletic Department Administrative Assistant; 821 S. Jefferson Street; Port Clinton, Ohio 43452.
A healthy Wise County requires great community news.
