With sadness the family of Jim P. Scalf, 91, announces his passing on Thursday, May 14th, 2026. Jim was born in Big Stone Gap, Virginia and grew up in Exeter, Virginia. He spent his adult life in Port Clinton, Ohio and then retired to Appalachia, Virginia. Jim is a veteran of the U.S. Army and retired as a Government Inspector at the Standard Products Company, where he was a member of the United Auto Workers, Local 497 in Port Clinton. Jim was preceded in death by his parents, George Sr. and Fannie Scalf and his siblings, S.M., Juanita, George Jr., Yutella, and Scott Scalf.
Jim enjoyed fishing, sports, community service, and family. He took pride in his community, and his efforts were recognized by being named to the initial Port Clinton Athletic Hall of Fame Class as a community member for his notable contributions to their athletic programs. He was honored as a Lifetime Member of the Port Clinton Athletic Boosters, and was also recognized for his service as a School Board member in “PC.” In Appalachia, Jim was recognized with the Melvin Jones Fellowship (MJF) from the Lion’s Club. The award is the highest honor from Lions Club International recognizing members for outstanding humanitarian service, leadership, and dedication to the organization’s ideals. Jim was known for his dedicated support for his beloved Appalachia Bulldogs, Port Clinton Redskins, and finally Union Bears. He coached baseball at all levels from Little League to Babe Ruth to American Legion to High School.
Jim is survived by his wife of 67 years Lois Bernell Wells; sons, Gregory (Lori) Scalf of Litchfield Beach, South Carolina and Steven (Janie) Scalf of Vermilion, Ohio; grandchildren, Madison, Eryn, Robert, and Travis. Jim’s biggest love was his family, including his nieces and nephews, great-nieces and nephews, and great-great nieces and nephews.
The Scalf family will receive friends on Friday, May 22, 2026 from 1 to 2 p.m. at Roy A. Green Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held in the funeral home chapel at 2 p.m. with Rev. David Rose officiating. Procession will follow to Powell Valley Memorial Gardens for the committal.
