BETTY BUTLER

June 18, 2025

June 18, 1936 – June 8, 2025
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Betty Estella Butler, who departed this life peacefully on June 8, 2025, just ten days before her 89th birthday.
Betty was born in Big Stone Gap, Virginia, on June 18, 1936, the daughter of the late Earl Lawson and Caledonia "Dona" (Coffey) Baker. In her early adulthood, she moved to Michigan, and eventually settled in Royal Oak, Mi where she spent the majority of her life building a loving home.
She retired from Grand Trunk Western Railroad, where she worked for many years with dedication and pride. Outside of work, Betty was a proud and faithful member of the Hazel Park Church of the Nazarene, where she served as church treasurer for many years. Her commitment to her faith and her church community was unwavering.
Betty also had a spirited love for Detroit Tigers baseball. She rarely missed a game on television and had the joy of attending the 1984 World Series in Detroit—a memory she cherished deeply.
In addition to her parents, Betty was preceded in death by her beloved second husband, Mike Czerkis, her son, Keith Butler, and five siblings: Charles “Powder” Lawson, Margaret Feltner, Ruby Coffey, Nancy Kilgore, and Douglas Lawson.
She is survived by her brother, Johnny Lawson, and three sons: Donald “Rick” Butler and wife Lynn, Kevin Butler and wife Linda, and Steven “Mark” Butler. She was a devoted and loving grandmother to Michelle (Matt), Dan (Angelica), Tom (Megan), Susie (Michael), Megan, Brad, Brian (Amanda), Kevin Jr. (Kelly), Holly, Cory, and Lynsey (Matthew), as well as her many treasured great-grandchildren. She also leaves behind numerous nieces and nephews, who brought joy to her life and will carry her memory forward.
Betty will be remembered for her grace, strength, faith, and the deep love she had for her family and community. Her legacy is one of kindness, dedication, and joy in the simple things—like a Tigers win and a warm Sunday at church.
We take comfort in knowing that Betty's faith has carried her home, and her spirit will forever live on in the hearts of those she loved.
