RUBY MARGARET VARNER

Ruby “Mamaw” Margaret Varner, age 93, passed away in the comfort of her home and surrounded by her loved ones, on Wednesday, April 3, 2024, following a long-term illness.

Born in the Inman Community of Appalachia, VA, to the late John and Rebecca Davis, Sr., on May 29, 1930, Ruby devoted her life to being a loving daughter, sister, wife, mother, and grandmother. A hard-working homemaker, Ruby loved her family, and took care of more kids than she ever could have imagined having. She was an excellent cook, who enjoyed preparing Sunday dinners for her family and friends. Her famous biscuits and gravy and fried chicken will surely be missed. Of the religious faith and being passionate for her community, Ruby served in numerous churches throughout Southwest Virginia, singing her praises to the Lord. Ruby was a ten-year member of Keokee Free Pentecostal Church of Keokee, VA. Ruby will be missed dearly by all of her loving family and friends.

Other than her parents, Ruby is preceded in death by her devoted husband of forty-four years, Jimmy Varner; one son, Gearald Varner; one daughter, Patty Kiser; five sisters, Dorothy Polly, Gladys Akers, Patricia “Pat” Rose, Pauline Davis and Shelby Jean McKinney; and two brothers, James Davis and John “J.M.” Davis, Jr.

Survivors include one son, Mickey (Patricia “Pat”) Varner; one daughter/granddaughter, Deonna (Dino) Maggard; one brother, Dewey Davis; seven grandchildren, Mickey (Chasity) Varner, Jr., Clinton “Clint” Varner, Michelle (Jim) Taylor, Missy Varner Potter, Wendy Varner, Dub (Heather) Varner and Megan (Brandon) McCoy; ten great grandchildren, Jace Varner, Jim Taylor, Jr. (Leah), Hunter Taylor, Derrick Varner, Deanna Varner, Madison Varner, Sidney Varner, Brayden McCoy, Gunner McCoy and Kara McCoy; three great- great grandchildren, Tanner, Luke and Braylee; and three special caregivers, Tina Bush, Joyce Durham and Chasity Varner.

A visitation will be held at Holding Funeral Home, in Big Stone Gap, VA, on Sunday, April 7, 2024, from 3 p.m. - 5 p.m. Funeral Services will be held, in the funeral home’s historic chapel, on Monday, April 8, 2024, at 1 p.m., with Pastor John Varner officiating. Burial to immediately follow at Powell Valley Memorial Gardens in Big Stone Gap, VA. Family to serve as pallbearers.
