LAURA ANN POWERS CARY

Laura Ann Powers Cary, 88, passed away peacefully at her home on Sunday October 17, 2021, after a long illness.

Laura was born on May 20, 1933, in Big Stone Gap, VA. She moved to Gainesville, GA in high school when her mother, Grace Mahaffey, remarried Henry H. Estes. 

She attended Emory University as a nursing student, and later in life completed a Political Science degree, Cum Laude, Phi Beta Kappa, at the University of the Philippines.

Laura married Emory Prescott “Pres” Cary Jr. in 1951, which began a journey of traveling and motherhood.  After ten adventuresome years of living in the Philippines, she returned to the United States to establish a home in Lilburn, GA.  There she raised six children, creating a home,that to this day, is a gathering place for family and friends.

Laura had many monikers; Laura Annie, Dovie, Granny, Grandma, Momma; each holding special significance for those who knew and loved her.  Her lively and colorful stories, her fond memories retold, her philosophical discussions, her abiding faith in God, her love for life and family, her beautiful smile, and her warm embraces will be cherished and remembered.

Laura is survived by six children; Emory “Chip” Cary, III (Leiani), Kathryn Farrow (Steve), Grace Cleary (Tim), Sarah Stoffer (Dwight), Sam Cary, Laura Angelique Sapp; 13 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren.

God bless our Momma, and until we meet again “May God hold you in the hollow of his hand”.

A graveside service will be held at Alta Vista Cemetery, Gainesville, Ga.  Saturday October 23 at 11:00 a.m.  Dr. Bill Coates will officiate.

Flowers will be accepted, but those desiring may make memorial contributions to the Alzheimer’s Association in memory of Mrs. Cary.
