Black Bear BBQ

The smoker at the Black Bear BBQ is being rebuilt at the manufacturer. Meanwhile on Monday Chris Williams, owner of the restaurant traveled to Hampton to purchase a smaller smoker and they are planning to have BBQ back on the menu later this week. Check for the daily specials on Facebook at Black Bear BBQ and Grill. The food is great and the atmosphere is very down home and comfortable furniture to enjoy your meal so, all in all, it is a great place to eat.

Nothing New Under the Sun

How many times have you heard the saying and Bible scripture “Nothing New Under the Sun?” Solomon, the wisest man in the Bible said this. Well, last week as we were entering Norton I noticed a trailer parked in front of a small building. I remembered when I was very young, especially in Appalachia, there was delicious hot dogs and hamburgers prepared and carried out in a paper bag and it was prepared in an old unused “gutted bus”. Hattie Johnson, Bessie Jones and of course we cannot forget Mrs. Toliet’s place. Nothing will ever compare to those places and the memory of those delicious foods. The food trucks roll into town on special festivals and they offer their special prepared items. The Appalachia Mercantile’s hot dogs remind me of how great a good hot dog is. They have the secret to the chili.

Fall at the Mercantile

It’s Fall at the Mercantile! They have, made from scratch, cream cheese swirled pumpkin muffins and pumpkin spice syrup in lattes. A luncheon special is available until 2 pm on Tuesday - Saturday. On Saturday, October 2 the Mercantile doors will be open to serve their great food to those who would like to come inside and sit down and enjoy their food or carry out. They aim to please.

Mountains Changing Colors

The mountains are beginning to change their colors. We noticed them on our ride home from Wise this week. I believe we are going to have a colorful fall this year. I remember the poem we had to learn about October’s beautiful skies, clouds, fields, red apples. It was very descriptive and after we memorized it and repeated it for our grade it took on more meaning and understanding. I thought, “I cannot do this”, but I did it for a grade and I have not forgotten it to this day.
