National Day of Prayer
Thursday, May 6 is National Day of Prayer. Our country needs prayer today more than anything.
For many years I have read and heard the teaching “If my people shall humble themselves and pray and seek my face, turn from their wicked ways, then will I forgive their sin and heal their land.”
Now this is a promise God gives us so now today is the day for us all who believe to seek, to pray and turn from our wicked ways. If we do our part God will do His part.
Pray for America.
Mother’s Day
Mother’s Day is Sunday, May 9. In 1914 President Woodrow Wilson signed a bill designating the second Sunday in May as “Mother’s Day”.
Everyone is free to celebrate honoring their mother they way they choose. Flowers, a live plant, plant a tree, either a flower or fruit tree, breakfast in bed, out for a special dinner, bake a cake, a homemade gift, photos of the family, jewelry with birthstones of the children’s birth months. Everyone has a unique mother and this is a day you can honor your mom.
I am among many who are unable to do anything for honoring mother on Mother’s Day. We take flowers to the cemetery to place on our parent’s grave.
There are some mother’s who have lost their child in death and if you know of someone in this state reach out and be that friend to let them know you want to tell them Happy Mother’s Day!
Thoughts Appreciated
Gary and I appreciate all the cards, calls and singing over the phone from our dear friends for the 56th year of our wedding anniversary.
Last year we were in quarantine due to our exposure to someone who had tested positive for Covid and we didn’t know it.
This year we are able to go out and wear our mask! We are thankful God has brought us through all this year’s events safely.
Prayer Request
Our friend for many years, Jane D. Stone, is in need of healing in her body. Jane is undergoing treatments and she needs our prayers. Jane lived in Big Stone Gap all her life until she retired from Wise County Courthouse and moved to enjoy being with her son, grandchild and daughter-in-law in Indiana.
Please remember Jane in your prayers.
Birthday Wishes
May 7th our friend Opal Tate is having a birthday. Her dear husband, J. Fred Tate, wishes his wife Opal a blessed and happy birthday.
We all wish Opal and healthy and happy birthday.
River View Cemetery
Saturday Gary and I drove out to River View Cemetery to place flowers in the vases of his family members. The mowing has begun for this year.
As I have mentioned numerous times, River View Cemetery is funded by donations. Your donations are needed to maintain the mowing and upkeep this year.
If you live out of town you can make sure the grave of your family is mowed and looks good by sending a donation to the treasurer, Randall Hicks, Box 162, East Stone Gap, VA 24246.
Please make a donation to keep up the good work in the cemetery.
The Boy Scouts troop has volunteered to help place the American flag on each veterans grave this year before Memorial Day. Gary and Randall have ordered 250 flags to be placed on the veterans markers.
Heart Surgery
My brother, John McCarroll, underwent a 3 hour heart procedure on Monday and he is doing very well. The surgery was long but God helped our dear Martha endure the waiting time and John did very well. Please keep John and Martha in your prayers.
East Stone Gap High School Alumni Association
The East Stone Gap High School Alumni Association will resume their annual banquet and gathering on Saturday, June 12 at 5:30 p.m. at the Taylor-Lewis Center in East Stone Gap.
A catered meal will be provided. Tickets will be available at the door for $20. This event is open to any graduate, student and their spouses/friends of this school during it’s existence.
Workers Needed
I cannot help but notice the signs posted at various businesses and eateries in our area, “Now Hiring”, “Need Workers”. In grocery stores, building materials and being able to eat a meal in a restaurant, help is needed to keep the business flowing.
Again we all can say “I have never seen such a time in my life.” The last year we have eaten at home more because we are staying in to stay safe. It appears there are more jobs available but fewer people need to work.
