Main Street Cruise In

Appalachia Main Street back by popular demand! The first Cruise In Main Street night of the year will be Saturday, April 3, 4 pm to 8 pm.

This event is planned for the first Saturday in April, May, June and July.

Come out and bring that nice car, truck, motorcycle or daily driver. This is “Not” a car show. It’s just car lovers getting together to have a good time.

Appalachia Lions Club

Appalachia Lions Club will meet at 6 pm, Thursday, March 25. This is their second monthly meeting for March. Wear your mask and practice social distancing. President Ben Hooper would like to see all Lions attend, meet, eat and enjoy.

New Street Signs

New street signs and posts are being installed in Appalachia on Main Street. This will help us know where to find people by their street address. These signs are much larger than the former signs. They have the appearance like a black lamp post light. They are very nice!

LOOKING FOR RELATIVES

Gary Bush, as Executor of the estate of Nancy Virginia Buchanan, formerly of 14 Jerome Street, Big Stone Gap, VA, who passed away Feb. 23, 2021. She was the daughter of Dwight Elsie Post Buchanan of the same address.

Anyone claiming to be related to this family, please contact me at 276/565-1386. Please leave your name and phone number on my answering machine if I am not available at the time of the call. Please respond by April 14, 2021. Your help will be greatly appreciated.

Grass Mowing Time

Springtime is mowing grass time. Please make sure you send a donation to those in charge of the cemetery mowing.

Easter, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day and Memorial Day, these are always a time the graves are decorated.

The RiverView Cemetery in East Stone Gap is maintained by your donations.

The mowers are contracted to mow so we all have family members resting there and we cannot go out and mow so send your donations to Randal Hicks, Box 162, East Stone Gap, VA 24246.

Our senior citizens have been faithful through the years to donate for the upkeep but they are gone on and now we are the senior citizens generation. Plan to send your donations to keep RiverView Cemetery looking good.

First Day of Spring

Saturday, March 20th, Appalachia residents welcomed the first day of spring with a beautiful sunny, warm morning and a 5K half marathon. Runners of all ages doing what they enjoy, running.

We watched from our house as they came up the steep incline street of Dixon Avenue and connected to Brown Street in front of our home. It was good to see so many people participating in this big race. Great weather was a big plus also for the race.

Birthday Celebrations

March 30th a very well known lady in Big Stone Gap will be celebrating her birthday. Virginia Meador in this lady. We wish her a blessed birthday.

Carla Cornett also has a birthday on March 30th and we wish this nice, talented young lady a happy birthday. Carla is a very dear friend to all who know her.

Loretta Caudill Shepherd, formerly of Inman, attended AHS and was a majorette in the school band, has a birthday on March 31st.

All Loretta’s friends wish her a happy birthday.

Palm Sunday

Sunday, March 28 is Palm Sunday. The day remembered when Jesus rode into Jerusalem on a donkey and His followers laid down palm branches for Him as He passed by. He was recognized at this time as King of the Jews. Five days later He was crucified on a cross, a day known as Good Friday.

Church Attendance

It has been one year since I have been in a sanctuary at a church! We all know the reason for this. We older folks are in the same boat. I do have a compromised immune problem and I have to take medications for it and breathing treatments. Wearing a mask is hard for us with lung problems.

Gary is able to electronically have three church services on Sunday morning and one on Sunday night. These are a big blessing to us each Sunday with “Zoom.” Bible study is done five nights a week with three members from the church.

I do a Sunday school lesson each week and it takes me all week to study and read it. I got to thinking, we are doing much more reading, studying, preparing a lesson that we did when we were able to attend church each Sunday morning and listen to the Pastor minister.

I hope and pray this dilemma will be over in a few more months and churches can come back in the sanctuary, school students are in their classrooms and we can take off these masks. All my life I have been in Sunday school and church on Sunday.I do miss being with people and attending God’s house on Sunday.

Extend Sympathy

We extend our sympathy to the family of Joan Lee K. Bishop. Joan Lee was born and raised in Imboden and Lower Exeter and in the 1960 AHS class graduation. She was preceded in death by her parents, Ruby and M B Bishop, Jr., sister Marglo Rose and daughter Jeanine K. Sturgill. She is survived by her husband of 58 years, John T. Kilgore and son Jacob (Jennifer) Kilgore. Funeral services were Sunday, March 21 in the Roy A Green Funeral Home chapel. Graveside service followed at Powell Valley Memorial Gardens.

Returning to Area

In passing by the Cornett house on Bell Avenue in Appalachia, we noticed the lights were on and a car was parked in the driveway. That was a welcome sight to see. Great to have people moving back into our area to live.

Appalachian Mercantile

Remember there is a new business in Appalachia, Appalachia Mercantile on Main Street. Various types of coffee and pastries. All very delicious. They are closed on Sunday and Monday each week. Come by and you will see how good it is. They are adding more things in their inventory weekly.

Visiting from Oak Ridge, TN

Our brother, Danny Bush from Oak Ridge, TN is visiting with us for a few days. Due to the Covid we have not been able to have any contact this past year in person We all have had both vaccinations and will practice 6’ distancing.

With the temperatures in the 60’s and 70’s we will be able to sit on the porch to talk about what has happened this past year. We remember and have a lot to laugh about so we do enjoy his visits.

Card Ministry

A lovely lady in Appalachia has a card ministry. I am so glad she sends a card for every holiday in the year to us. Thank you and God bless you as you do His will.
