Favorite Springtime Memory

Someone asked me “what is your favorite memory of Springtime when you were growing up?” Well, I sure do love to see the white Bartlett pear trees when they are white with their blooms and the pink dogwood tree and my favorite is the Jonquil, little yellow flowers. They will bloom in any kind of place they can be planted. I think these flowers are my favorite thing to remember.

Fifty five years ago Gary and I, his mom and dad and Sabrina, our 9 month old daughter drove to Manassas, VA to visit Jerry and Nella Bush and they took us to Washington DC and those pink cherry blossoms were a sight to see. It was something you never got tired of looking at and they are plentiful. They are still there and ready to bloom this spring. It would be great to go and visit Washington DC and Arlington Cemetery once again and see all those beautiful spring flowers.

We do frequently visit our local cemeteries. I like to read the inscriptions on the grave stones and the date of their departure. I am intrigued with the older upright stones. Glenco’s lane for vehicles to drive on is recognized with names of flowers. This is helpful to know where to go to identify the grave marker you are looking for.

Trash Pick Up

Saturday there was a trash pickup in the town of Appalachia of various locations through out the Appalachia areas.

There is a tremendous amount of trash along sides of the highway all through the county. It is throw away drink cups and bottles, cans and paper bags! I do believe all this litter is coming about by so much drive through and the eating in the vehicle and throwing the trash out the windows anywhere they please to throw it out.

There has to be a solution soon. We drove to Jonesville last weekend and the trash on the highway to Lee County is bad also. It is all along the roadways and in the ditches.

In Like a Lamb,

Out Like a Lion

Well, March is now half over and you will remember the old saying, “if it comes in like a lamb, it will go out like a lion.” In our area it has been pretty mild! Next two weeks will be questionable as to how it will play out.

One good thing is spring snows do not last like December and February snows, froze to the ground. They melt pretty quickly.

Celebrates Birthday

We were celebrating our son Shawn Bush’s birthday on Sunday at a restaurant in Big Stone Gap. After everyone showed up we had a total of 21 people. The 4 Seasons took very good care of a large crowd. Cupcakes and a birthday cake were the desserts.

It was a good party with family members.

Birthday Wishes

Gerald Willingham, formerly from Andover, is having a birthday on March 25th. All your friends in Andover and Appalachia wish you a happy birthday.

March 26 Randy Blair will be celebrating his 77th birthday! We all wish Randy a blessed happy birthday.

Our dear friend, whom I have known over 50 years, is celebrating a birthday on March 27. Faye S. Rutherford is celebrating here 87th birthday. Longevity is on her side of the family. Faye’s mom, Debbie Short lived to see her 96th birthday and Grandma Bowens celebrated her 100th birthday with a big party.

Three generations of Godly, hard working women!

Hello in Hopewell

Sunday afternoon, to my surprise, Barbara Horton was out with a friend and enjoying a Sunday meal. Barbara said to tell her brother, Larry Ward, in Hopewell “Hello” from all his family and friends in Appalachia and Big Stone.

Larry is a Post subscriber living in Hopewell.

Prayers for Raymond Davidson

Raymond Davidson had to have his appendix removed at Norton Community Hospital. He is in a great deal of pain and had to readmitted Monday, March 8th to the hospital for more problems.

Raymonds needs all his friends to please pray for him. He has faced many health issues and prayers of God’s people have helped him through it all. Pray for Raymond, he is in serious condition at Norton Community Hospital.

Condolences

We were saddened to learn of the passing of an old friend, Betty Miller. She passed last Sunday after a long illness.

Remember Charles and their daughter, Julie M. Dietz and grandchildren in your prayers.

Appalachian Mercantile

We visited the Appalachia Mercantile, located in the old Witt Appliance building last week. They plan to have a ribbon cutting probably Saturday, April 3.

Seeing the old building reminded me of when Witt’s Appliance and Furniture Co. stocked the bottom and 2nd floor with everything you needed.

We purchased our first “new” washer and dryer and they were copper tone in color. That was very uptown in 1966. Copper tone and harvest gold were the in thing. We made monthly payments at the store till it was paid for. Don’t do that much anymore!

Those were the days! Great memories of those days gone by. We hope the new business can be as successful as the former owners were.
