Daylight Savings Time

Daylight savings time begins Sunday, March 14th Spring forward with the clock but our bodies don’t adjust as easily as clocks do. It is hard for any age of a person.

I remember how hard it was on me the last few years at AHS. The only class I was fully awake in was PE. Running laps, playing basketball and the jumping jacks and other exercises Mrs. Berta had us girls participating in. Then you had to shower. Now you know why us girls were wide awake.

Those were the good old days and we didn’t know it.

Spring Begins March 20

March 20 spring begins! I have my hopes for a warm, sunny Spring so we can be out on our porch and yard.

Typical March Weather

We can testify to the fact that the first two weeks of March have been typical weather conditions for our area in Southwest Virginia, warm, wind and sun.

This area is the only place I have ever lived in my lifetime so it feels like our typical March sun and wind is the way it should be.

Kite flying used to be the thing for kids to enjoy with the wind taking it up high in the sky. I don’t believe kites are even sold anymore.

Jumping rope, playing marbles, hop scotch and other games we played outdoors and enjoyed being out. Life has sure changed the way to entertain the kids. We never heard of latch key kids!

I still think we had the best of the times with not too much of an expense, just enjoying playing together with the simple things to do.

Happy Anniversary

Happy wedding anniversary to Sandy and Billy Thomas. March 16th is their big day to celebrate.

Birthday Wishes

We have a very dear friend who is celebrating her 97th birthday on March 19. She also claims the 20th due to the doctor filling out the card the next day after she was born, but Inez’s mother said she was born on March 19. When you live to be 97 years old you can celebrate any day of the year you like. We all wish this special lady a blessed Happy Birthday! Inez you are one of a kind. We love you.

My sister-in-law Nella Mae Bush in Bealeton, VA, a Post subscriber, is having a birthday March 20. We wish Nella a happy 76th birthday.

March 21 Chris Williams has a birthday. Chris is one of our newly elected town council officials and also a business owner in the town of Appalachia. We wish Chris a happy birthday on March 21.

March 14 is our son Shawn Bush’s 49th birthday. Believe me, I will never forget that day. We did not know what the baby was until he was born. He had a lot of yellow and green to wear. We were so proud to be his parents, Bush baby boy!

Moved From Chicago

Gary and I were at Powell Valley Cemetery last week and met a very nice young man working in the office. He had lived in Chicago. He and his wife were married at Natural Tunnel and decided this was the area they wanted to live in.

They live in Pound, her hometown and he loves the beautiful drive to his work in Powell Valley. His wife’s uncle, Gary Harvey lives on Ridge Ave in Appalachia. Gary has helped with their moving. Southern hospitality. Leaving Chicago and coming to Southwest Virginia is a great idea and we are glad to see young couples come to our area.

Appalachian Mercantile

The Appalachian Mercantile on Main Street in Appalachia opened last week and it was a successful week. Gary and I were out of town with our daughter and we were not able to attend but we heard great reviews and the desserts sold out each day. That is great! Can’t wait till we get over and see what they have to offer. We are so glad they chose Appalachia to have a business.

Attended Memorial

We attended our friend, Nancy Buchanan’s memorial service on Sunday at The Christian Church in Big Stone Gap. Her home church all her life. Nancy was placed with her family in Glenco Cemetery.

Appalachia Lions Club Meeting

Today, Thursday, March 11 at 6 pm Appalachia Lions Club is meeting. The menu is “tex-mex” consisting of taco soup, Mexican muffins made with Mexican style corn and Mexican blend cheese, nacho corn chips with chili, nacho cheese and salsa, desserts and beverages.

Ben Hooper, Lion president, invites all members to attend. Don’t forget to wear a mask and social distancing.

Good News for Smith Family

Good news for the family and friends of Gloria H. Smith. Gloria finished all her radiation treatments and last week a body nuclear scan was done at Bristol Hospital and the doctor told her people had been praying because there was no cancer or tumors in her body!

Gloria is rejoicing at what God had done for her. Prayer does help and she thanks everyone for their prayers.
