Tasty Treat to Remember

Here’s an easy, tasty treat to remember, the Chat N’ Chew restaurant in Appalachia. In Georgetown, KY Bob Gamble (AHS 1956) and David Fraley (AHS class of 1969) were reminiscing about the hometown restaurant located on Main Street.

While trading memories of the delicious fare, Bob recalled one treat in particular. For those who wanted something extra sweet, the cook would place a honeybun on the grill to caramelize the glaze and then add a serving of ice cream on top.

Naturally you’d wash this down with a Coke. Oh, the sugar!

This wasn’t the only restaurant Bob remembers from his hometown, Appalachia. His grandmother operated the Appalachia Grill in the town’s hotel.

It was a true family affair upon Ridge Ave. His father raised the pigs that provided the restaurant with meat.

Bob shares those fond memories of growing up in Appalachia with his younger brother George, AHS 1965 graduate.

While Bob and David currently make their home in Georgetown, George lives in Western Kentucky.

Thank you for the fond memories of the good old days of growing up in our small but great town of Appalachia. Memories are better when shared with others.

march Birthdays

My high school friend, Nellie Honeycutt, has a birthday on March 6. We wish Nellie a blessed and happy birthday.

March 9 is a very special birthday for Nancy Hall. She will be celebrating 98 years on this earth. Happy Birthday Nancy.

George Polly also has a birthday on March 9. Happy Birthday to George Polly.

56th Wedding Anniversary

More high school friends are celebrating a special event on March 9.

Donnie and Monta Herron have their 56th wedding anniversary. Happy anniversary you two!

Spring Weather

The weather last week was a great mood booster! Sunny days are always a motivation to work. Sun shines in and I see the dust very clear on the floors and furniture. Price I pay for having wood floors.

Anything we could do outdoors we did for a few days, before the rains hit on Friday.

I do hope we have a mild March this year. Jonquils are about 4 inches out of the earth and they are the March flower. Little yellow flowers and the snow does not hurt them.

We all need an “early spring” so we can be out of doors. That will make us all feel much better.

Farewell to Nancy Buchanan

We were sad to say farewell to our dear friend, Nancy Buchanan. Nancy had suffered a heart attack on January 16th. She did not regain her strength in the last five weeks with blood clots in her lungs and leg. She could not fight anymore.

Nancy’s last words I heard her say were “Thank you Lord”. She was at Lonesome Pine Hospital where she volunteered for 25 years at the auxiliary desk 3 days a week.

Many friends who worked at the hospital are able to come by and see her briefly and say goodbye.

Nancy was preceded in death three months ago by her cousin, Susan Hamilton of Conyers, GA. They were very close. Nancy’s mother, Elsie, father, Dwight and brother Guy Buchanan preceded her in death many years ago.

A memorial service will be held at First Christian Church on Wood Avenue in Big Stone Gap Sunday, March 7 at 3 pm with Greg Townsend officiating.

Nancy was placed with her family in Glenco Cemetery in Gig Stone Gap.

Find Strength in the Lord

We need not become discouraged by our world events. Find strength in the Lord to stand strong in faith no matter the circumstances in the world around us.
