Valentine’s Day

Valentine’s Day is a very old tradition, thought to have originated from a Roman festival called Lupercalia in the middle of February, officially the start of their springtime.

It was thought that as part of the celebration, boys drew names of girls from a box. They’d be boyfriend and girlfriend during the festival, and sometimes they married!

Now this would have been too wild for me with our young boys back in the late 50’s. We made a small valentine box decorated with hearts and our name on it. Our friends dropped a card in the boxes. Then you knew who liked you.

Now it has originated into expensive gifts of jewelry, cards, flowers, candy, shopping trips, and dinners, so a card is a great way to let you know you are loved.

One thing for sure, you are never too young or too old to receive and give a valentine to those we care for.

Recovering from

Heart Attack

Our friend Nancy Buchanan is recovering from the heart attack which has left her very weak and bedridden.

We are thankful she is back at the Laurels but visitors are not allowed in due to the Covid laws!

It is hard not to be able to visit with her. Please continue to lift her up in your prayers.

Celebrating Birthdays

Friday, February 12 we have some friends celebrating birthdays. Mary E. Wilder is proud to be in her “early 90’s!” younger brother, Don Estridge, shares the day with his sister Mary. They both live in Inman.

Our friend, Betty Meyers now lives in Big Stone Gap. Her parents, Jack and Pauline Long, lived in Inman during their early years of marriage.

We wish all these fine friends a Happy Birthday.

Saturday, February 13 another Inman boy, Frank Christian, now living in Tennessee, is celebrating a birthday. Happy birthday!

Monday, February 15 is a special day for two lovely ladies. My dear sister-in-law, Martha S. McCarroll, will celebrate her day. I am sure my brother will make it a birthday to remember.

Also on February 15 my sister in the Lord, Joyce H. Estridge will celebrate with her two daughters and son-in-law.

Endora makes delicious and beautiful special cakes. Coleen likes to plan events and Jackie is there to help them with it all so a party is no problem for this family. Happy Birthday to two special ladies.

Covid Vaccine

We have an appointment on Friday to receive our second Covid vaccination in Norton at MountainView. We had no problem with the first shot, don’t anticipate any problem with the second one.

More Snow

The snow we woke up to Sunday morning was beautiful. A very different type of snow, wet and heavy.

That old groundhog in Pennsylvania said it was six more weeks of winter and thus far we have had two weekends of snow and coldest of temperatures! So he got that right.

Our spring weather is due later in March with spring is officially here. I hate to see things bloom too early and cold temperatures and frost kills them for the season. We experienced that one year and the trees and flowers lost all their spring beauty and we were into the summer before they recovered to show their leaves of green.

Road Trip to Bristol

A doctor appointment on Monday for a yearly checkup had us on a road trip to Bristol. I sat in the car to wait and the sun was so bright and hot I had to move the car to another area of the parking lot to avoid the sun. Yes, Monday was a beautiful and hot day and melted the snow that fell on Sunday.

The type of weather you don’t mind going through a drive-thru and ordering your food and finding a good spot to park and enjoy eating out and not worrying about exposed to Covid.
