Lions club dinner canceled

Due to the COVID-19 social distancing order from the governor the annual Lions Club Christmas party has been canceled.

Celebrate Birthdays

Betty Harvey’s brother, Gary Harvey, who lives in Appalachia is celebrating his birthday, Nov. 26th.

Betty wishes her brother a Happy Birthday.

Friday, Nov. 27th a very familiar face we all know in Appalachia and Andover will be celebrating his 89th birthday!

Mr. James Napier is the man. He loves rabbit hunting with Randy Blair from Andover and he keeps up with him.

Happy Birthday old friend! James is happy to tell his age and he is a Christian.

Celebrates Anniversary

A very special, loving couple in Big Stone Gap will be celebrating 59 years of marriage this month, Bobby and Phyllis Hamilton.

Happy Anniversary to you both. They attend East Stone Gap Baptist Church.

Thanksgiving Guests

This Thanksgiving our daughter Sabrina and her husband Richard, our son Shawn and Emily and our granddaughter Berkley will be at our house for Thanksgiving dinner.

I still miss going to my mother-in-law’s house for a large family Thanksgiving day dinner. Family members of 20 were always there for the traditional dinner.

Friends always dropped in for a visit but sat down at her table to share the meal. It was great fun and the kick off for the Christmas traditions to get underway.

Memories are great of my earlier Thanksgiving days.

Santa Claus Photos

I saw a commercial on TV advertising for children’s pictures made with Santa Claus. A live Santa with a plastic shield on his face. Sign of the times. This certainly will be a holiday to remember.

Appreciation

I do so much appreciate the cards and calls from friends who enjoy reading the Appalachia News. It is very encouraging to hear from you.

Thank you all for your appreciation.

Remember Nursing Homes and Assisted Living Residents

Don’t forget your family and friends who are now living in the nursing homes and The Laurels assisted living facility.

A card means a lot when you have not had visitors for the last 8 months due to the quarantine and no visitors are allowed in the facility.

Let them know we have not forgotten them.

Cancer Treatments

Our niece, Gloria Hall, has completed 4 double doses of Chemo, then 10 single doses of Chemo.

The first of December she begins 33 rounds of radiation. Gloria has retired from her job in Abingdon.

She is very thankful to God for giving her the strength to complete these terrible doses for Chemo. Now she is still trusting God will deliver her through this radiation.

Gloria was a 1971 gradate of AHS.

Her parents were Alice (Sis) and Bill Hall of Inman.

Gloria still has an up hill battle with this cancer so please remember her in your prayers.

Early Birthday Wishes

Due to the Thanksgiving holiday the paper will be a day earlier so I am sending a couple of early birthday wishes to some ladies in our area.

Sally Gibson wants to make sure her daughter, Debbie Collier, knows that her mom loves her and wishes her a very Happy Birthday on Monday, Nov. 30th.

Bonnie Ireson wishes her good friend Leshia Sizemore a Happy Birthday on Monday, Nov. 30th. Leshia is like a daughter to Bonnie and she loves her dearly and appreciates all the things she does for her.

Happy birthday Leshia.

Condolences

We send our condolences to the family of Agnes Lorene Estridge Linville. Agnes passed away Friday, Nov. 13th peacefully with her family by her side. She was 91 years old.

Agnes had lived in Waynesville, Ohio for many years. Funeral services were conducted Friday, Nov. 20th at Gilliam Funeral Home in Big Stone Gap. The family received friends from 11am to 1pm.

The funeral was conducted by Agnes’s brother, Don Estridge at her request many years before. Her final resting place was at American Legion Cemetery in Big Stone Gap.

We were sorry to hear of the passing of Jim Barker. Jim and his wife Doris were a very devoted couple to one another.

When you seen one, the other was not far away. They attended the Appalachia First Baptist Church. Please keep Doris in your prayers.

We send our condolences to the family of Jim Taylor. Jim contracted the Covid virus and passed away at Heritage Hall in Big Stone Gap on Wednesday Nov. 18th.

Bad News on TV

I do not watch the news on TV very much. It seems it is all bad news.

I have talked to some people in our area and their houses are being sold to people from Vermont, New York and more states too many to mention.

Our area may not be entertaining but it is a place we can survive and live. It is hard to imagine New York City appearing the way it is today.

One thing we all agree on is it is the worse time our generation has had to live in. COVID-19 is to blame. It not only effects the U.S.A., it is world wide.

India is very bad and people are dying galore.

I believe only God can remove this plague from our world.
