Lions Club White Cane Day is Oct. 15
Apology
Sorry for the typing error for Kim Mabe’s name in our Appalachia News last week. One letter changes the name.
Harvest Moon
How about the Harvest Moon we had last week! We will have another one October 31, which everyone remembers is Halloween!
When we were growing up in Inman there were no street lights and we didn’t get out unless there was a “full moon” and boy did we look forward to that time. I think the prettiest full moon I can remember was in 1961. A big snow came and covered up everything! The moon came out “full” and the snow looked like cut diamonds glistening, all white and fluffy. Very few cars traveled the highway so sleighs were made from pretty much what you could find. It was fun! I have a lot of good memories growing up in Inman and great family like friends.
WHITE CANE DAY
October 15 is National Blind Awareness Day and White Cane Awareness for The Lions Club is observed. The white tip of a cane means the person is totally blind.
Appalachia Lions Club
Appalachia Lions Club will meet in the Fellowship Hall of the Appalachia First Baptist Church on Kilbourne Avenue in Appalachia Thursday, October 8 at 7pm. The menu is Kentucky Legend ham, sweet potato casserole, white corn, rolls, cake and beverages.
Saddened by Passings
We were saddened to read in last week’s Post about the passing of Harold Kirk in Big Stone Gap.
Harold always had a smile on his face and a big laugh. He was a very happy man. We send our condolences to his wife, Donna.
Barbara Evans Harris passed away this week. Barbara was in the 1962 graduating class at AHS. She married her high school sweetheart William Harris and lived in Hopewell, VA.
Barbara was preceded in death by her daughter and her husband William.
George Bolling, 95 years old, passed away in his sleep this week at his home in Tennessee. George was married to Linda Smith Bolling. He lived in Norton and graduated from J.I. Burton High School.
October 8 Birthdays
October 8 has three special birthdays to celebrate. Matt Dysart lives on Cold Springs Drive with his family. We wish him a happy birthday.
Also, the Hall brothers, Bob and Larry, formerly from Inman. Bob lives in Kentucky and Larry in Big Stone Gap. We wish these two brothers a happy birthday as they share the Oct. 8th day.
More Birthdays
Monday, October 12 Debbie Hall Ford, youngest sister to Bob and Larry is celebrating her birthday. Happy birthday Debbie.
October 13 our dear friend Louise Henegar will be celebrating her 90th birthday.
A birthday celebration was held at Glenda and Larry Flanary’s home out on the lawn with a big tent for comfort to sit in if you preferred.
It was a great way to celebrate and being able to be outside made it much more enjoyable. Masks and distancing were in full practice.
We all wish Louise a blessed happy birthday.
October 15 Faye Hall Bush has a birthday celebration. Every school student and faculty has eaten food prepared by Faye in AHS and AES over their years in working and attending our schools.
She is in very poor health and lives with her daughters and granddaughter on Callahan. Remember Faye in your prayers.
Saturday Night Cruise In
Gary and I went over in town for the Cruise In Saturday night in Appalachia. It was a great success. We sat on the benches with our friends Bud and Lou Sampson and watched the “cruising”.
It was like stepping back in time seeing all the older cars, trucks restored and cruising.
Donnie and Montana Herron was in their “56” Chevy and boy did it look great and so did Donnie and Montana.
In the back seat, like a double date, was their “great” friends, Johnny and Sue Aistrop.
Everyone was having a great time. They drove through town, turned at the Home Town Variety Store where food trucks were set up if anyone wanted to eat. The flow of traffic continued on.
I can truthfully say 6 foot distancing was evident. We, on the street, wore our masks.
Once you have to go through a 14 day quarantine and report to the health department each day with temperature checks, you learn masks are not so bad.
Better to be safe than sorry!
It was a very fun evening and I look for more to come of this due to it’s great turnout of vehicles and people coming to see them.
