Cruise In Night

Appalachia Main Street Cruise In night is Saturday, Oct. 3 at 5 pm with food trucks, cruising and music. Classic cars, motorcycles, ATV’s and more will be cruising through town. Come and enjoy this event.

It’s A Boy

Big announcement from the Green family on Brown Street in Appalachia. The announcement stating “It’s a Boy” was attached to their fencing with a cluster of balloons. Congratulations to Lee Green and his lovely wife’s arrival of the baby boy in November.

Attends Funeral

Gary and I attended the funeral of our old friend Shirley Rogers on Sunday. Shirley had been at Heritage Hall nursing home the last four years. Everyone who knew Shirley knew how involved she was in organizations, church, family and charities. She had a full life. Alzheimer’s changed her life the last five years.

Her former pastor David Gilbert conducted her funeral and singers were Roger and Gladys Pierce and Louise Sampson.

Gilliam Funeral Home served the family.

Back Home in Big Stone Gap

We were happy to learn Richard (Dickie) and Patty Cornett are living in Big Stone Gap. They have travelled in their motor home to many states but now they have settled in Big Stone Gap. Welcome back home.

Celebrates Birthday

Sunday, October 4 our friend Alan Wolfe will be celebrating his birthday. Happy Birthday to Alan. Those granddaughters will have a big party for you.

More Bears

Last week I wrote about our encounter with the black bears and the trash on the side of the road.  Dale and Rubal Taylor filmed, on his phone, a mama bear and 3 cubs out in the middle of the road. You could see the white lines on the highway they were walking on. Dale and Rubal were out sightseeing and saw this family of bears in Dorchester. They are everywhere!

Fall Colors

Have you noticed the trees are turning in color? Maybe this will be a beautiful fall. The cold snap we will be having tends to make the trees turn faster. I just plan on enjoying looking at our mountains. No where else compares to the beauty of them.

Deepest Sympathy

(Provided by Susie Richardson)

It is with a heavy heart and the deepest sympathy that my thoughts and prayers are with the families and friends of three of Appalachia High School “Bulldog” alumni, who I learned had passed this past week.

I first learned about the passing of Kathy Jane Mullins, then Shirley Rogers and finally Sharon Dorton.

Kathy Jane and Shirley both passed due to health issues and Sharon passed from injuries received in a fatal car wreck caused by someone who had been drinking and driving.

Shirley was the mother of Kim Gabe, one of my 1976 AHS graduating classmates and if not for falling behind, both Kathy Jane and Sharon would have graduated the same year. Both did go on to graduate from AHS at a later date.

In fact, Sharon was exactly one day older than me. Her birthday was Dec. 6 and mine is Dec. 7.

Both Kathy Jane and Sharon grew up on Ridge Ave. in Appalachia, a couple of doors down from one another.

Growing up, all the kids on “The Hill” (as we called it) played together after school until we  had to go in when it started getting dark. We played dodge ball, kick ball, softball, kick-the-can and tag to name a few. We went trick-or-treating together, went out on “corn night” and “soap night”, even snuck out and smoked “corn-silk” together on top of Petesie’s Mountain growing up.

Both Kathy Jane’s and Sharon’s childhood homes, on Ridge Ave, were destroyed by fire a few years back. Now as I pass their vacant lots, on my way home, I will always be reminded of the good times we shared growing up together on “The Hill”.

They will be greatly missed by one and all!

May God bless them and be with their families and friends, now and always. Especially be with them giving them comfort with His never-ending love forever and always.
