Veteran’s Wall clean up appreciated
Veteran’s Wall Looks Great
The Veteran’s Wall in Appalachia looks very good! A big thank you to whoever cleared away the shrubbery so the wall once again is visible for the public to see. Again, thank you, it looks great!
Celebrate Birthdays
Today, August 13, a very well known lady in our area is celebrating her 90th birthday. Billie Jean Scott is this lady. Billie Jean worked at the library in the former Powell Valley High School. During her tenure there she was known and cared for by many students in the school.
A 90th birthday celebration was planned but due to the Corona virus it is not going to take place at this time.
If you would like to send a birthday card her address is: Billie Jean Scott, PO Box 503, Big Stone Gap, VA 24219. Let Miss Scott enjoy hearing from her friends and former students with a birthday card.
A Post subscriber, formerly from Andover, now living in Kingsport is celebrating a birthday today, August 13. Phyllis Jervis Bush is this lady.
Her husband, Elbert Bush wishes his lovely wife a very Happy Birthday.
My nephew, Mark VanWinkle, now living in LaFollette, TN is celebrating his 52nd birthday today. Happy Birthday.
50th Anniversary
Fifty year wedding anniversary celebration for Vonda and Allen Wolfe on Friday, August 14. Congratulations to a wonderful couple.
Buckeye Trees Turning
Last week we noticed the Buckeye trees’ leaves are turning! Coming down the back side of Ridge Avenue to Callahan you will see just how they have changed color. I believe we will have an early Fall.
Bears Making A Mess
The large black bears are making a huge mess by turning over the big black trash cans and ripping open the trash and strowing it all around the street. Residents on Blondell Street report the large black bears come out around 11 p.m. and wreak havoc on the trash. You wake up on Saturday morning to an ugly, trashy mess in the road. No one is going to go out and try to run this bad boy away. A 400 pound bear is not to be messed with.
Lions Club Meeting
Tonight, Thursday, August 13 Appalachia Lions Club will meet at 7 p.m. in the Senior Citizens Building on Main Street. All Lions are urged to attend this meeting.
Town Council Meeting
Appalachia Town Council will meet Thursday, August 20 at 5 p.m. in the former Appalachia High School Auditorium, due to the six foot spacing of people inside for a meeting. Covid rules must be followed.
Covid Cases Climbing
I see each day on the TV the number of Covid cases in Wise County is climbing daily. It is a strange site now to see people “not” wearing a mask. We are all trying to protect one another from the dreaded virus. The pleasures of life are governed by the rule, wear a mask in public. People do not stop in the aisles to carry on a conversation because most of the time we do not recognize the person behind the mask. We will stay at home, eat at home and wear a mask when we do go out. We are all in this together and by the Grace of God we will overcome.
