Isaac family part of town’s history from early 1900s
Condolences
We were sorry to hear the news of the passing of a former Appalachia resident,
David Isaac, 83 years old.
The Isaac family has been a part of the town of Appalachia from the early 1900’s until David retired and closed Dave’s Dept Store. While he managed and operated the store on Main Street in Appalachia he was very much involved in the success of the town. He was a devoted “Bulldog” fan and supporter of the football and basketball programs. He was the person responsible in establishing “The Miss Caboose Contest” held the Saturday night closing out the week long events at Railroad Days and the contest is still very popular today to wind down the festival.
David served as President of Special Projects in the town of Appalachia working with the town manager. He was a proud member of the Business Association.
David was very close to Bonnie and Herb Ireson and their family. He came to their house each year to celebrate the holiday festival with them at Christmas.
Even in his death he was thinking about the people in Appalachia. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Appalachia Food Bank.
Our condolences to the Isaac family.
Sight Seeing Tour
Gary and I went on our sight seeing tour of local places we have not been to in some time. Saturday evening was perfect weather for a ride.
We usually drive through the cemeteries where our families are resting to make sure everything is okay with their markers and flowers.
We decided to go on Egan Road in the valley. It is a beautiful sight to see the homes, farms, cattle and the view of the mountains.
It is too much to take in with one trip so we will have to go back, especially when the fall colors are in.
I have some friends who live on Egan Road but there are so many houses it would be difficult to find. We just enjoyed the drive and the scenery.
Birthdays Celebrated
My dear friend and some sort of a family relative, Naomi White, celebrated her 94th birthday on Tuesday, August 4. Naomi is a very active lady, loves to cook meals and share with her friends who are unable to leave their homes. She is a Godly woman and loves the Lord. I know her birthday was special from her boys and their wives. Happy Birthday Naomi.
Friday, August 7 our retired school teacher, coach and bus driver, Mr. Bob Taylor celebrates his birthday. Happy Birthday Mr. Taylor.
Dog Days Over Soon
Tuesday, August 11 “Dog Days” are over!
50th Wedding Anniversary
Allen and Vonda Wolfe will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary next Friday, August 14.
God blessed them with a beautiful daughter and she blessed them with two beautiful granddaughters and a son-in-law!
We know there will be a family celebration but all your friends want you both to know we are very happy for the two of you.
August Weather
In our area of the state of Virginia you can tell without looking at a calendar it is August. Cool evenings and “foggy” very cool mornings. It used to be a time the children were getting ready to return to their school year. Now we wonder will there be a school year for the students to be able to return.
My friend Nancy always says time will tell and I know this is true.
In Distress
We were in Lowe’s last week and I passed a man in the aisle and I always look a people’s eyes first. I noticed he had a mask on of the American flag.
I made a comment to him that his mask was upside down due to the stars on the bottom. He smiled and said “Yes! It is in distress”, then he asked me this question. “Don’t you know our country is in distress?”
Well that was a first for me but next time I see a flag upside down on someone’s nose and mouth I will know why. “Distress”
Retiring
Carolyn Barker, a former resident of our area and hair stylist for 50 years is retiring! She worked in Appalachia for over 20 years, moved to North Carolina and worked until now.
Congratulations to Carolyn, enjoy your retirement.
Remodeling
We have lived in our house 51 years on August 8. You would think the remodeling is over. “No”. Due to a leaky ice maker we are redoing our kitchen floor and now the bathroom had to be done also so with new floors you have to have new fixtures to have everything matching.
We hope to finish later this month and since we have nowhere to go due to the virus, we will enjoy the newness in our old home and be thankful for it.
Lions Club Meeting
Appalachia Lions Club meeting is August 13 at 7 p.m., 313 West Main St., former Senior Citizens Building in Appalachia. The menu will be Kentucky Legend ham, Tennessee Pride hash brown casserole, sausage gravy and biscuits, cooked apples, butter pecan praline cake and various beverages.
Sunflower Seeds
Last spring, which seems like years ago, Gary and I planted sunflower seeds our friend Bill Wilder gave us. Well, three months later we have over 12 feet high beautiful sunflowers. They are along our fence in our back yard.
I am sure we will have plenty of seeds if anyone wants to have some seeds to plant for next spring.
