Flags placed on grave markers of soldiers
Cemetery Flags
I walked and carried the flags through the cemetery at RiverView in East Stone Gap. Gary and Randall placed the flags on the grave markers of the deceased soldiers.
This was the first time I had been involved with helping and actually read the names on the grave markers were the flags were placed. Much to my surprise several people I had gone to school with are now resting in the cemetery and I did not know they had passed. The cemetery has grave markers that go back to the early 1800’s. Confederate soldiers are resting there. The large upright white stone markers are assurance of the time period in the 1800’s.
I felt very sad to see some of the older stones have sunk and some are so tarnished you cannot read the names on them. I am sure all of the family members have now passed on and there is no one to care for them. Kyle Strong was always very supportive in making sure the work was carried on in the cemetery. So many of the supporters have passed and now it is up to those who are remaining to help with your donations to help pay for the mowing. Send your donations to Randall Hicks, PO Box 162, East Stone Gap, VA 24246
Good News
We heard from Una Faye Ford that they were able to take Mike Ben off the ventilator on Sunday. Now he will be able to breathe on his own with the help of oxygen. Keep him in your prayers for a good recovery.
My niece, Karen VanWinkle is making progress regaining her strength after an ordeal with the Corona Virus. It takes time to get back on your feet.
Prayer changes things!
Lions Club Meeting
Susie has cleaned the tables and chairs with disinfectant in preparing for the Lions Club meeting on June 11th at 7pm in the Appalachia Senior Citizens building on Main Street in Appalachia.
Susie’s menu is pinto beans, kraut and winners, fried potatoes, cornbread, killed lettuce/onions, deviled eggs, punch bowl cake and ice cream.
Prayer Request
Remember Susie in your prayers. She is having a very much needed cataract eye surgery. This has been delayed because of the Corona Virus. She is very much looking forward to this surgery.
Happy at Home
I talked to Sam and Charlotte Green last Saturday. They have not been out of their home in over 70 days not due to the stay at home recommendations. Sam and Charlotte both have health issues so they decided to stay at home and be safe.
Charlotte has four cats and who knows how many outside animals not counting ground hogs! She orders her animal food online and they deliver it right to her door. Also her groceries are online.
Charlotte is happy caring for Sam, her animals and herself at their home in Appalachia.

Past Memories
A few days ago I was in our basement and much to my surprise I saw a very well used item from our younger years. A food tray that fits on your car window for curb service.
Eating in your car was the only way to eat at a drive in diner. This was a treat in Big Stone Gap at the famous “Country Boy”. Anything you chose to order was great food. Looking at this tray brought back a lot of great memories of our past years.
Cars circled and looked at the friends in the parked vehicles and sometimes they were able to park beside an interesting person and talk for hours.
Country Boy was where all the young crowd loved to go, meet and eat.
