NATIONAL DAY OF PRAYER

Today, May 7th is National Day of Prayer. We need to pray everyday and trust God. Today’s world situation is the worst I have ever in my life known. Deaths, destruction of homes due to storms is all you hear on the TV news. All bad news, very seldom any good news today is heard on the media.

Prayer continually is our hope for God to deliver us. I am glad this day of May 7th is a National Day of Prayer. We will continue to pray daily. God will deliver us.

I have been reading about Daniel in the Bible. He opened his window and prayed 3 times a day everyday. God heard and took care of this man. Same God we pray to today and He hears our prayers and He will take care of us also. Like the song says, “Trust and obey for there is no other way.”

LIONS CLUB MEETING

The Lions Club in Appalachia plans to have their meeting on June 11 at the Senior Citizens Building. The meal will be ready at 6 pm for the Lions and Lioness to enjoy. Meeting will follow the meal.  This menu consists of  kraut and wennies, fried potatoes, pinto beans, cornbread, killed lettuce/onions, deviled eggs, punch bowl cake, ice cream and beverages.

STONEGA VETERANS BANQUET CANCELLED

Due to the Covid-19 Pandemic the Stonega veterans banquet is cancelled. We look forward to the yearly event with great anticipation, seeing those we worked for and with during our tenure with the companies which formed Westmoreland Coal Company. We regret this decision however we want to keep as many safe as possible. Until next year, please take care.

BIRTHDAYS

Joyce Fields, a lovely lady living in Appalachia celebrated her 86th birthday this week.  Joyce has never shown her age and it is hard to believe she is 86. She is as beautiful as ever. Happy Birthday to a lady who is beautiful on the inside and the out.

Sunday, May 3rd Lucille Herndon celebrated her birthday. Hubby Wayne wished his lovely wife a Happy Birthday. Way to go Wayne.

My 12th Shirley Harris will be celebrating her birthday! Since no dining in is a rule I have not seen Shirley and Homer out to eat. Stay home and enjoy our special events is all we can do for now but maybe this will pass before too many birthdays come and go. Happy Birthday Shirley.

TESTS POSITIVE FOR VIRUS

Last Saturday morning, April 25th, we received a phone call from my niece Karen and asked us to pick her up at Lonesome Pine Emergency Exit. We did, of course, and we wore our masks and she had on an N95 mask for protection.

Later in the evening we were notified Karen had tested positive for the Corona 19 virus. We had to have a 14 day quarantine at home. Not too bad cause their is no place to go and you have to wear your masks and stay 6 feet apart. We stayed on our property and worked on a few projects trying to pass the time. Bible reading helped.

I have made more cornbread and soup beans in the last two months than I have in years!

Home cooking is what we were reared on.

TOWN COUNCIL ELECTION

May 19th is the date for the Town of Appalachia’s three seats for town council election. Voting absentee is highly recommended by the Governor of Virginia. Long lines avoided and 6 feet apart.

This is the best way to avoid crowds and be safe at home with the virus still a risk.

Call the registrar’s office in Wise and they will send an application for a ballot. Mail it back and you will receive a voting ballot for you to vote for the candidate of your choice. Follow the instructions and you will see how simple this procedure is. Just follow the instructions and exercise your right to vote. Avoid social distancing. Call Robbin’s office at 328-8331 to request a ballot by mail.

CORONA 19 VIRUS

Our niece, Karen VanWinkle had to be admitted to Lonesome Pine Hospital and she has the Corona 19 virus. This is a terrible virus! She is now on a ventilator at Lonesome Pine Hospital and is very ill. Karen has a great deal of serious health problems and now the virus is raging in her body. Her lungs are not that strong. A great number of people who know Karen’s condition are praying for her recovery.

Sally Gibson, our prayer warrior, has known Karen since she was a young girl and Karen asked Sally to pray for her. It is all in God’s hands. He knows the situation.

CELEBRATED 55TH WEDDING ANNIVERSARY

Sunday, May 3rd was our 55 year wedding anniversary. Quarantined at home we celebrated being together those 55 years with a home cooked dinner a I must say better than any restaurant I know. Beef roast, creamed potatoes, glazed carrots, green beans and hot rolls and lemon pie, and a beautiful sunny, warm day is was.

I look back on the years and every anniversary was celebrated in a different way. This will be one year’s celebration I don’t think I will forget for sure. In quarantine for 14 days. That’s a two week honeymoon and I am thankful for God granting us 55 years together.

SUSIE RICHARDSON

Susie told me she saw her hematologist and her bone marrow test showed she had an iron deficiency and she was anemic. Got to get the blood built up. Her cataract surgery is scheduled for May 26. Now to help Susie we all need to pray each day. Her treatment for the blood problem is Geritol. That has been around for many years. Prayer changes things when we ask.

PHONE CALL FROM

BRUCE LARGE

Received a phone call from our former neighbor and friend Bruce Large Sunday. He had heard Gary and I were in quarantine! Bruce is looking forward to traveling over to Appalachia to work on the display of the old Acme Drug which he donated to the ACAC back in February if this year.

Due to the Corona outbreak everything has been put on hold. Hard to work 6 feet apart. We hope to have the pictures and the display all properly attached so when you walk in you will have the memories of how it was to sit down and enjoy an ice cream cone, milk shakes and sundaes and talk and not be in a big rush to go shopping.

Step back into the past 50 years when life was easy and living was good.

REUNION RESCHEDULED

We are rescheduling this year’s “Blair Family and Friends Precious Memories Gathering” for Saturday, Sept. 26, 2020 at the Andover Community Center beginning at noon with a pot-luck/covered dish luncheon to follow at 1 pm.

This date was selected to coincide with the “Blair Reunion” in Scott County on Sunday, Sept. 27 for those who travel and want to attend both reunions. So put it on your calendar, gather your pictures and bring your delicious dishes for a time of reminiscing and family fellowship!
