Half marathon rescheduled to May
The Union Half Marathon and Relay has been postponed until May 9.
The event was supposed to take place Saturday, but was postponed due to concerns over the spread of the COVID-19 virus.
The event, which supports St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, is mostly organized by students and school faculty.
On its Facebook page, half marathon organizers explained that early packet activities and festivities will now take place on May 8 and activities for the race will take place on May 9. Organizers wrote: “We understand that this is never a perfect solution to move a race, but we would rather have the opportunity to still run this race. We are fortunate that this date, May 9th will still work with the town of Appalachia, the town of Big Stone Gap and We Run Events.”
In a separate post, organizers stated that several messages had been received about the date change. It was explained, “When the governor of your state shuts down schools for two weeks, which meant all sports cannot gather to practice or participate for two weeks, our hands are tied.”
A virtual option is available for those who cannot make the May 9 date. According to the Facebook page, the virtual option will still allow runners to obtain a race t-shirt and a finisher medal. It is stated that more details will be provided.
At press time, no organizers could be reached directly for further details.
