True Art Showcase and Children’s Contest
Southwest Virginia Museum invites artists to submit artwork
The Southwest Virginia Museum Historical State Park will hold its True Art Showcase and Children’s Contest from Wednesday, March 4 through Sunday, March 22, celebrating the works of area artists.
True Art, named in honor of James True, the first curator of the Museum, features the works of today’s local artists in a show that celebrates the creativity and talents of our friends and neighbors. Works in a variety of mediums will be on display throughout the Museum from Wednesday, March 4 through Sunday, March 22. Regular admission rates apply. The deadline for submitting art for the showcase is Friday, February 21; due to limited presentation space, please limit submission to four pieces per artist. Participation forms are available from the museum’s front desk on Thursdays from 10 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. The museum is closed January and February.
The showcase also includes a student art competition reflecting this year’s theme, “Landscapes of Southwest Virginia,” open to students in grades K-12. Entries should portray some aspect of Southwest Virginia’s rich culture, history and/or natural surroundings. Drawings and paintings are welcome. We request a maximum size of 11”x17” and welcome smaller submissions.
All entries should be accompanied by the student’s name, school name and grade. Judges consider entries in the following groupings: K-2nd, 3rd-5th, 6th-8th, and 9th-12th. All submissions should be received at the museum by Friday, February 21. Winning entries will be on display in the museum from March 4 until March 22. Winners in each group will receive certificates at a reception held at the museum on Sunday, March 15 at 2 p.m. in the Victorian Parlor.
