Mildred Adams celebrates 101st birthday
MILDRED ADAMS TURNS 101
Mildred Adams celebrated her 101st birthday with a celebration on Sunday, Jan. 12 at The Laurels Assisted Living Facility where she has resided for almost three years.
Some of the family members we talked to during the celebration included her daughter Jeri and son-in-law Donald Grubb, grandson Brad Francis, niece Debbie Neison, David Harrison and her nephew Keith Goff from Norfolk. Keith traveled 500 miles to be with his aunt Mildred on her special birthday.
The residents were there to enjoy the party including Nancy Buchanan, Howard Cummins, Garnette Gilliam, Madge Hall, Gordi Bolling, Frankie Jackson and several more I wasn’t acquainted with were there.
Everyone had their picture made with Mildred. I asked her how it felt to be 101 and she smiled and said “I am tired,” and I would say she was.
Cupcakes, cheese ball, crackers, punch were served to those attending the party. Sam and Charlotte Green, Mary and Gary Bush, Randy Blair, Garnette Gilliam’s wife also attended.

HEART SURGERY
Our friend Kennith Belcher underwent bypass heart surgery last week. The last I heard he was doing good and the surgery was a success a family member told me.

The Appalachia Lions Club will meet Thursday, Jan. 23. The meal will consist of hot dogs with Sandy’s homemade chili, French fried potatoes, baked beans with brisket, Cole slaw, deviled eggs, peanut butter pie and peanut butter fudge and beverages.
The Valentine’s Day Italian Dinner will be held Feb. 13 at the Lions Club building on Main Street. Bring someone special! The menu will consist of spaghetti with homemade meat sauce and meat balls, tossed salad, garlic bread and regular bread, red velvet cake and vanilla ice cream and beverages.
REUNION INFORMATION
I don’t do Facebook, “but” Gary checks in on it occasionally and he read a message about a Class of 1965 planning a 55 year reunion. If anyone has any information pertaining to this please let me know. We didn’t have a 50 year reunion so it would be nice to see our classmates together one more time.
TOWN OFFICE CLOSED
The town of Appalachia offices and town workers will enjoy a four day weekend. Friday is Lee-Jackson Day and Monday is Martin Luther King Jr. Day so the office will be closed on Friday and Monday.
GATHERING PLACE
It seems the one and only grocery store we have for Appalachia and Big Stone Gap customers has become a gathering place to see our neighbors and find out the latest “news!” It always takes a couple of hours now to shop but it is worth it to see people we have not seen in a while. This week we saw J. Fred Tate. He is doing very well and so is his wife, Opal.
GOOD REPORT
I thank God for a good medical report I received this week. I had a CT scan and nuclear bone density test. No cancer, no cracked bones! My pain is arthritis in most all of my bones. The doctor said to use ice and take pain meds. Ice reduces the inflammation that causes the pain. I had been using the heating pad, I will do better now.
