Nice to remember childhood memories

by BY BILL HENDRICK Staff Writer

It is nice to just sit and reminisce about childhood memories.

One memory that sticks in our mind was Dec. 7, 1941.

We had gone  to see a movie at the old Bolling Theater in Norton and when we came out, people were all on the sidewalk talking about someplace called Pearl Harbor.

The Japanese had bombed it and a lot of Americans were killed.

We didn’t really know a lot  about Japan but it was agreed that the good old U.S.A. would take care of them in less than two weeks!

A lot more American boys would be lost and it took a lot longer than two weeks to resolve the conflict.

You’re covering a lot of territory when you go from 1941 to great grandchildren.

Storage

Our senior high school class only had 27 students and after graduation, they left Wise County and settled all over the country.

A few we would never see again.

Somehow we managed a couple of class reunions, the fortieth and fiftieth, and the memories they brought back were priceless.

At the fortieth, we had lost only one former student. The next 10 years were not so kind!

We don’t want to get too personal but there is a lesson to this story.

If you have a chance to renew old friendships, make the effort to do so.

Precious memories will be your reward.

This reminds me of another classmate and boyhood friend who wrote me several years ago. His note was on a Christmas card and he wrote: “Let’s get together soon before it’s too late!”

It was too late.

He died before we had the chance.
