MAUDE ETHEL SMITH JERVIS
Maude Ethel Smith Jervis, 91, of Andover, passed away peacefully on October 13, 2019, at her son David’s home in the Crackers Neck section of Powell Valley. She was surrounded by her loving family at the time of her passing.
She was born in Inman, Virginia, on March 14, 1928, to James Patton Smith and Golda Speer Smith, formerly of the Pattonsville area of Scott County. Throughout her life, Maude was proud of her Scott County roots and the five generations of the Smith and Speer farm families. After the family relocated to Appalachia, Virginia, Maude’s parents and siblings, Katie, Herbert (Joyce), and Elmo, spent the rest of their lives there until preceding Maude in death. Also preceding her in death were special niece, Pam Smith, and nephew, James “Snuffy” Smith.
Maude attended Appalachia High School and became a lifetime supporter of the Bulldawgs. She also attended Inman United Methodist Church, where she met her future husband, Daniel V. Jervis, in 1947. Once married, they moved to the community of Andover and settled down across from the old schoolhouse in a home that Maude would occupy until her death 70 years later. During her life, she worked at the Miss Virginia Sewing Factory, Park’s Belk, and the Wise Appalachian Regional Hospital. Both Maude and Dan, who became a Methodist lay-minister and pastored churches in Wise and Lee Counties, dedicated their lives to the service of others- humbly and freely giving. Her zest for life, generosity, and unfailing kindness was exhibited through love and deeds.
She and Dan had three sons, Daniel Alan (Candace), Patton Lee (Melissa), and David Lynn (Bernita). All were present when their beloved mother passed away. Also surviving are her grandchildren, Alan, Eric (Ashleigh), Patton O., Seth (Blair), Lauren (Amber), Josh (Angie), and Gabe (Trish); great-grandchildren, Ingrid, Isaac, Haven, Quinn, Beau, Braydon, Tanner, Abbi, and Macee; and special niece, Priscilla Smith Acevedo.
Maude’s love of family was unconditional, selfless, and unending. Her work ethic, honesty, and toughness have left a permanent mark on all those she loved, including not only her family, but also the Andover Church, the community of Andover, and all the friends and neighbors whose lives she touched throughout her 91 years of life and 70 years in the small town.
The family would like to express deep gratitude to Maude’s friends and the various medical staffs who cared for her over the past several months.
